HMS AUGUSTA 3rd rate; 64 Cannons; 1.381 bm; 159x44.5 ft; Built in 1763 by Stannone & Wells, Rotherhithe.
Both AUGUSTA and the sloop MERLIN, Cdr. Samuel REEVE, took the ground, while attacking American Fort Mifflin, Delaware, below the entrance of the Schuylkill. As preparations were made to lighten the ship, a number of wads took fire aft. This spread rapidly and most of her crew were rescued before she blew up. MERLIN was also set on fire and abandoned.
