San Juan Nepomuceno was a Spanish ship of the line launched in 1765 from the royal shipyard in Guarnizo (Cantabria). Like many 18th Century Spanish warships she was named after a saint (John of Nepomuk). She was a solidly built ship of proven seaworthy qualities.
Her sister-ships were San Pascual, San Francisco de Asis, San Lorenzo, Santo Domingo and San Agustin.
HMS Juno was a 32-gun Amazon-class fifth rate frigate of the Royal Navy. She served during the American War of Independence, and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

HMS 'Sphynx' was a Sixth-Rate 20-gun ship built to the design of Sir John Williams, surveyor of the Navy, at Portsmouth, Hampshire, and launched in 1775. She was broken up in 1811.
Le Requin (The Shark) was used by the French Royal Fleet and was built to defeat the Barbarisian Pirates who used similar vessels in the Mediterranean during the 18th century.
La definizione di "schooner” era in uso nella marineria adriatica, sotto l’amministrazione austriaca; il termine era sinonimo di "goletta”, che a quei tempi aveva un significato più ampio e non restrittivo come oggi, e che identifica un veliero a due alberi verticali, armati con vele auriche e munito di bompresso.
Le sue origini, in Olanda era presente fin dal XVI secolo uno "schoone” a due alberi attrezzati con vele auriche, ma molto diverso come scafo, con il fondo piatto e le due derive laterali. Lo "schooner” navigava nel XVIII secolo nel nord Europa e ne possiamo infatti travare ampia testimonianza nel trattato di Chapman "Architectura Navalis Mercatoria” del 1768; ma questa tipologia è tipicamente americana per peculiarità di forme ed armo velico.
